The Moonwalk London 2011 – A step closer to finding a cure

the girlsRomina Luccardi, Maria Pomakides and Leslie Bustos will be participating in ‘The MoonWalk London 2011′ on 14th May 2011. Their fundraising target is £1,500.00 with the funds they raise being donated towards Breast Cancer in the ongoing fight to find a cure and save countless lives worldwide.

The MoonWalk London 2010 is organised by Walk the Walk. This is a unique event as not only do all the participants power walk a marathon (26.2 miles) or half marathon (13.1 miles) depending on which distance they have chosen, but they all wear decorated bras to raise awareness for breast cancer.

Power walking is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK; it is low impact and accessible for all ages, sizes and levels of fitness. An average walk is approximately 3 miles an hour – by power walking you are aiming to increase your speed to 4-4.5 miles an hour. By using a simple technique you will raise your heart rate and get the blood pumping, thereby improving your fitness! When you start power walking you will find after only a couple of sessions that you feel a difference and researchers have described it as ‘the perfect form of exercise.’

The Event.

The Moonwalk London will start on the evening of Saturday 14th May 2011 and it will finish whenever you complete your challenge on the 15th May 2011, with many participants will be power walking far into the night.

The Cause.

The reason why Romina, Maria and Leslie are power walking for Breast Cancer awareness comes in the form of an extremely courageous woman and her name is Barbara. Below are quotes from each fundraiser as to their inspiration behind the walk:

Maria says:
‘My friend Kay is an amazing lady and her smile can light up any room. She has had to fight breast cancer twice and sadly is now fighting it in her liver too. Kay is just 43 and is funny, loving and kind and I want to do all I can to ensure she has many more years cancer-free.

Romina says:
‘Barbara was just 2 months from retirement when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her courage, dignity & strength was inspiring even during the ordeal of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I’m so happy that treatment was successful and Barbara is now enjoying retirement free of cancer.’

Lesley says:
‘I am doing this for Maria & Romina’s friends and for all people fighting breast cancer. We need to find a cure as once we do we will be able to cure other cancers too so please help us – its so important.’

The Girls Say:

Powerwalking 26 miles across London for breast cancer is the BIGGEST physical challenge all of us have ever taken on and we would be lying if we said we weren’t nervous!!! We are training hard, powerwalking for hours / miles each week often through windy and rainy weather. Why are we doing this?

We are committed to making a difference and we are all part of the Come Together group. Our participation in this marathon powerwalk is inspired by our lovely friends Kay & Barbara that have fought breast cancer and we dedicate this event to them. At midnight on Saturday 14th May we will walk 26 miles in our bras through London to raise money for breast cancer. We need YOUR support. Please sponsor us and help us reach our target of £1500 for Walk the Walk to help find a cure for breast cancer. Any donation will make a difference and the government will make a contribution if you are a UK taxpayer so please tick the Gift Aid box if you are.

Thank you so much,

Romina, Maria & Leslie xxx

If you’re ready to join the charity support group then click here and fill in the form. When you complete your registration you will receive an email and a letter to confirm your place in the team.  After that, Walk the Walk will get busy working out where you can help.  A few weeks before the big night you will be contacted to let you know exactly what you will be doing as well as any other information you may need.
